Between the pointedly audience-defining &#8220;Do not go near a woman&#8221; parts of parashat Yitro, and the general &#8220;Look how far we haven&#8217;t come&#8221; morality of parashat Mishpatim, I&#8217;m already a bit grouchy, and then various rabbis sexually harrassed and otherwise dehumanised various of my friends, which was really not cool at all. <\/p>\n<p>So we&#8217;re having a post about puppies, because puppies make everything much better.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUo3X8M7sTI\/AAAAAAAAAiU\/Ib5_yaAH5nI\/s288\/puppy.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">I have a puppy. <\/p>\n<p>Parts of her are tan-coloured like parchment, and parts of her are black and shiny like Torah ink. <\/p>\n<p>She likes to squirm around on the couch. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoxTADx7pI\/AAAAAAAAAgE\/Ud9GE1o_C0w\/s288\/alef1450.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">I think this is probably meant to be an aleph. Everyone&#8217;s first aleph is a bit dodgy.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoxS7e9xyI\/AAAAAAAAAgA\/2se_ORIZqg0\/s288\/alef3.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">This is a much better aleph.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyAoOqUII\/AAAAAAAAAgk\/GS-oskZIJNo\/s288\/mem.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">Unless she meant it as a mem.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyA4Q7tzI\/AAAAAAAAAgo\/N5ZDfnU_7w8\/s288\/memstuma.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">It&#8217;s not a proper closed mem unless you actually bite your tail, but we&#8217;ll let it pass this time <i>ex post facto<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyT-q-zKI\/AAAAAAAAAg8\/dxqB_2AC3aI\/s288\/samekh.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">She might have meant it as a samekh, as well, and just forgot to tuck the ear in. These are the small details that make the difference, you see, but if she tucks the ear in next time and gets a good hold on that tail, it&#8217;ll be a very nice samekh.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyUGAMoJI\/AAAAAAAAAhA\/uFhI33-6lQg\/s288\/yud.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">This is a pretty good yud. It even has the kotz of Rabeinu Tam. Well done, pup!<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyTipdaEI\/AAAAAAAAAg0\/VIGos4ywAlA\/s288\/pehpeshuta.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">Straight peh &#8211; not easy if you&#8217;re a dog. A very nice try. The head shouldn&#8217;t touch the body, is the thing, so this one&#8217;s invalid, but on the plus side, the front paws are very nicely out of the way, and the back paws are beautifully pointed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyBHEP55I\/AAAAAAAAAgs\/XBW0MzLcYNw\/s288\/nun450.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">I think this is probably intended as nun, although properly speaking nun has three tagin, not two,and it shouldn&#8217;t kick up on the end like that.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUo3YhjFUMI\/AAAAAAAAAic\/5KiAdz8Ij6M\/s288\/gimel.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">Now, this is a surprisingly successful gimel. Three tagin, a head extending from each side, a good substantial foot well-joined to the body, and a body that extends a little down past the foot. Okay, it&#8217;s bent off to the side, but tails are like that, you can&#8217;t make them behave.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoxTUC134I\/AAAAAAAAAgM\/bCASoHVdjr8\/s288\/beit450.JPG\" style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">This has right-angles on both top and bottom right-hand corners, which makes it technically a beit.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyAL16iLI\/AAAAAAAAAgc\/MTEP_pBPpzA\/s288\/khaf.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">I think she may have intended it as a khaf, though khaf can&#8217;t have sharp corners like that. Beginners often suffer with this kind of khaf\/beit ambiguity; you need to learn both halakha and calligraphy skills before you&#8217;ll get it right reliably.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUo1Id7DpgI\/AAAAAAAAAiI\/c36XFCctz6A\/s288\/peh.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">Unless she meant it as a peh. The curly part should be bigger, though, and the Mishnah Berurah would say she should have a smoother curve on the back.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyTw_7JCI\/AAAAAAAAAg4\/rBM3vcorVu8\/s288\/reish.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">This would be a pretty nice reish, if she&#8217;d tucked that front paw in.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoxTkU1hzI\/AAAAAAAAAgQ\/OVejzDe6YlU\/s288\/dalet.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">This has a distinct corner on the back, which means it&#8217;s dalet, not reish. That bent head on the left brings it perilously close to being a het &#8211; she could improve this just by bending her head up a little, nothing drastic.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyAU8ZDSI\/AAAAAAAAAgg\/6WlpUBhnwNg\/s288\/lamed.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">A brave try at lamed. Lamed&#8217;s neck ought to be longer really, but this is a dog, not a giraffe.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUoyThLjPnI\/AAAAAAAAAgw\/pnm_2LBaNac\/s288\/nunpeshuta.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">I <b>think<\/b> this is intended as a final nun, but it&#8217;s one that&#8217;s gone rather wavy. It does have nice crisp edges, and a couple of very assertive tagin.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/_18cBnHAZSsk\/TUo3YIpbSRI\/AAAAAAAAAiY\/djEQr3KMCm4\/s288\/chai.JPG\"  style=\"float:left; padding:5px;\">A very nice Arizal het, only lacking the left-hand point. She seems to have gone for a whole word this time &#8211; \u05d7\u05d9 &#8211; that yud is rather dicey, not as good as the yud we saw earlier, but it&#8217;s very nice spacing, and she can fix the yud by twitching her ear back.<\/div>\n<p><i>Good<\/i> dog.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not a good week.
